Frequently Asked Questions RE HOOVES OF HOPE

Please reach us at hq@sirianstar.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes, horse riding is available, but it is structured as a separate service from our standard therapeutic sessions. Our core Equine-Assisted Learning and Therapy programs are predominantly ground-based, focusing on building an emotional connection, resilience, and confidence through grooming, leading, training horses and obstacle work. However, we do offer private recreational riding lessons with experienced coaches for individuals looking to get into the saddle.

Important Guidelines & Weight Limits

To ensure the safety and welfare of both our riders and our horses, please keep the following operational rules in mind:

  • Strict Weight Limits Apply: For the welfare of our therapy horses, weight restrictions are enforced for all riding activities. Industry safety standards require a rider's weight (including gear) to generally remain under 15% to 20% of the horse's healthy body weight, meaning limits vary depending on the specific horse allocated. Please contact us directly to confirm if we have a suitable horse for your specific needs.
  • Funding Limitations: Ground-based therapy and therapeutic supports can often be integrated into NDIS plans, but recreational riding lessons are not funded by the NDIS and must be paid out of pocket. Whilst Equine-Assisted Learning sessions do incorporate more riding, this is centred around developing core strength, emotional awareness, confidence and reinforce lessons leant from the ground rather than just learning traditional riding skills
  • Safety Assessments: All mounted activities require a prior assessment of the participant's balance, core strength, and ability to safely interact with the horse.

For your safety and comfort while attending Hooves of Hope, please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for a working horse environment.

Please wear:

  • Enclosed shoes at all times.
  • Non-slip sole boots are ideal for working around horses and uneven ground.
  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing, including a hat and sunscreen during warmer months.

For safety reasons, please do not wear or bring steel-capped boots, as these can pose additional risks when working around horses.

Helmets are provided by Hooves of Hope for all mounted activities and must be worn when instructed by staff.

If you have any questions about suitable clothing or equipment, please contact our team prior to your visit.
